Elective Major Areas of Study

The Program offers a number elective courses which are offered periodically to provide enhanced education in particular areas of student interest.

Child and Adolescent Major Area of Study

Students may elect to pursue a specialized emphasis in clinical work with children and adolescents. This emphasis includes additional elective coursework in assessment and therapy with children, adolescents and families, as well as focused training and research experiences as outlined below. Required courses include: 

  • PSYCD 1503 Life Span Development I
  • PSYCD 1671 Child Psychopathology
  • PSYCD 1705 Family and Systems Theory and Application
  • PSYCD 1473 Child & Adolescent Assessment I (Elective)
  • PSYCD 1474 Child & Adolescent Assessment II (Elective)
  • PSYCD 1475 Basic Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy, Individual, Family, and Parenting Approaches (Elective)
  • PSYCD 1476 Advanced Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy, Interdisciplinary and Consultation Approaches (Elective)

In order to enroll in electives within the Child and Adolescent emphasis, students must have successfully completed all required 1st and 2nd year courses. Students entering the program with advanced standing may seek permission from the emphasis director or program director.

In addition to the required courses, students who elect this emphasis are expected to meet the following requirements: 

  • At least two clinical training experiences focused on children & adolescents, one diagnostic, one therapy
  • Dissertation topic required to have a child, adolescent, or family focus
  • Mentorship-Group meetings with the Coordinator of Child & Adolescent Emphasis as scheduled
  • At least one submission of a presentation or scholarly work that has a child or adolescent emphasis (poster, presenter) at local, state, or national conference; must be primary presenter or author

Health Psychology Major Area of Study

Students may elect to pursue a specialized major area of study in Health Psychology. This major area of study includes additional elective coursework in areas related to health psychology, as well as focused training and research experiences as outlined below. Required courses include: 

  • PSYCD 1750 Psychopharmacology
  • PSYCD 1776 Health Psychology
  • PSYCD 1777 Integrated Healthcare
  • PSYCD 1494 Special Topics in Clinical Psychology (Elective X4)

The student electing the Health Psychology major area of study will be required to take a total of 4 elective courses in a health-related area of study. This may include elective courses in Pain Management, Lifestyle Interventions, Sleep Medicine, Women’s Health, and others. In order to enroll in electives within the Health Psychology major area of study, students must have successfully completed all required 1st and 2nd year courses. Students entering the program with advanced standing may seek permission from the major area of study’s director or the program director.

In addition to the required courses, students who elect this emphasis are expected to meet the following requirements: 

  • At least two clinical training experiences focused on health psychology
  • Dissertation topic required to have a health psychology focus
  • Mentorship meetings with the Coordinator of Health Psychology Major Area of Study as scheduled
  • At least one presentation in the research or professional arena that has a health psychology emphasis. This may be a research related presentation (poster or presentation) at a local, state, regional or national conference or a didactic presentation to a lay or community audience on a health psychology related topic.
